Research and Other Work
By day, I’m mostly a researcher and scholar. I specialize in newcomer/immigration related issues, politics and international affairs. Before I started writing fiction, I published an academic book, Sanctuary Regions and the Struggle for Belonging. That book is mostly meant for university students and other social scientists. My research work is driven by a fascination with the international political workings of the world and more particularly borders, migration, statelessness, questions of power and priveledge. I’ve turned much of that into fiction and stories and you might notice some of these themes in a lot of my work. I also work in consulting, supporting others in curriculum development, training and data analytics.
I’m currently leading a large study that measures the impact of municipal migrant inclusion policies (sometimes called ‘sanctuary ordinances’). It’s a partnership between my team at NorQuest College and the City of Edmonton. In a time when migrants and newcomers are facing incerased risks of deportation, harm and death, research like this is needed to understand how cities and those who live within can resist this violence. Reach out if you’re interested in learning more.
I also have a few other literary projects listed below.
